Hi, everyone! I’m Mary Hammes, the new Environmental Stewardship and Volunteer Manager for the Mississippi River Fund as of August 6th. I’m so thrilled to be here! These first few weeks have been a wonderful whirlwind of volunteers, goldfinches, and prairie grasses.
I’ll be working with Ranger Kathy Swenson and our various partners to coordinate volunteer habitat restoration events in the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. I’m here to invite community members (like you!) to these beautiful public spaces for opportunities to serve and connect with our river.
I spent my first week with a group of middle schoolers managing buckthorn at Coldwater Spring. These kids wanted to WORK. I actually heard one ask “we're done already?” as we wrapped up the project. How cool is that! We also had a chance to measure the clarity and temperature of the stream and learn about how watershed changes can impact the stream’s health.
When you meet me, you should ask me about the time I spent on rivers across the state with the DNR Water Trails program!
I am looking forward to meeting you! Come join me in a canoe or on the prairie and discover your favorite part of our 72-mile national park. Contact me by phone or email to set up a habitat restoration event, 651-219-9119, email@example.com.
